{"id":685,"date":"2007-03-06T14:02:47","date_gmt":"2007-03-06T13:02:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.martin-koser.de\/BMID\/index.php\/archive\/science-sharing-and-tuning-rd\/"},"modified":"2007-08-15T22:00:03","modified_gmt":"2007-08-15T20:00:03","slug":"science-sharing-and-tuning-rd","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.martin-koser.de\/BMID\/2007\/03\/science-sharing-and-tuning-rd\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Science sharing&#8221; and tuning R&#038;D"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wikinomics.com\/\">Tapscott and Williams<\/a> in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessweek.com\/innovate\/content\/mar2007\/id20070302_219704.htm\">BusinessWeek<\/a> offering examples of companies such as Novartis and Intel that are encouraging <strong>open systems of collaboration<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>As large-scale scientific collaborations become the norm, scientists will rely increasingly on distributed methods of collecting data, verifying discoveries, and testing hypotheses not only to speed things up but to improve the veracity of scientific knowledge itself.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Meanwhile, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.economist.com\/index.html\">Economist<\/a> gives a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.economist.com\/science\/displaystory.cfm?story_id=8769863\">good overview of some more recent trends in corporate R&#038;D<\/a>, notably that labs are shifting their attention and forces from research to development:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Companies tinker with today&#8217;s products rather than pay researchers to think big thoughts. More often than not, firms hungry for innovation look to mergers and acquisitions with their peers, partnerships with universities and takeovers of venture-capital-backed start-ups.<br \/>\n[&#8230;]<br \/>\nModern technology firms are much less vertically integrated. They use networks of outsourced suppliers and assemblers, which has led to the splintering of research divisions.<br \/>\n[&#8230;]<br \/>\n\u201cThe lesson learnt is that you don&#8217;t isolate researchers,\u201d says Eric Schmidt, the boss of Google, who started his career as a computer scientist at Bell Labs and later at Xerox PARC. The \u201csmart people on the hill\u201d method no longer works, he adds. Instead, researchers have become intellectual mercenaries for product teams: they are there to solve immediate needs.<br \/>\n[&#8230;]<br \/>\nThe old model of research, of \u201cputting people in a bubble\u201d, is over, he says.
