\n2005: The year the media will turn inside out<\/p>\n

The media is self-organizing. Not the old fogies, such as daily newspapers, magazines, and television networks, but the legions of self-publishers and producers on the web. <\/p>\n

In recent months, the rise of podcasting has sent a flare up over the trenches of old media, key figures have abandoned their posts in old media to set out into the new, and now Yahoo has announced a well-documented format for RSS media syndication that will support text, audio, and, now, video delivery. A new wiki-based news organization, WikiNews, will pioneer a form of news editing that, while it?s ripe with potential problems, is a provocative change from the passive consumption of news.<\/p>\n

There?s something new coming, called “citizen advertising,” that combines passionate advocacy and unsolicited evangelism on behalf of products. Some bloggers are working under new sponsorship models (disclosure: including me, your humble Red Herring blogger), and others are joining emerging blog publishing combines. BlogAds, AdBrite and Google AdSense, among others, are paving the bridge between existing and new advertising models. <\/p>\n

The mutants are taking over and the result will be a media environment in which the audience is in charge and, frequently, the producers of content. RocketBoom, for example, is a now-daily newscast for technology enthusiasts produced by a small team that clearly aims to build an audience that will support an advertising model. It?s only a couple of months old, but it?s one of the first ?videoblogs? to be featured on other sites.<\/p>\n

Everything is up for grabs. Audiences. Marketing channels. The very shape of advertising, marketing, and promotional spending. BzzAgent, a system that distributes product to individual bloggers for reviews, demonstrates what happens when companies? primary promotional goal is to win evangelists to their products rather than to attract new customers. <\/p>\n

Media transformation, which is always possible, now seems inevitable. The next year will see the kinds of evolutionary moments in media like those that last took place in warm puddles of ooze to produce man, ape, and slime mold.
