Mark Greiner: Businesses are recognizing the importance of choice to their employees. By providing options in how and where their employees work, they’re noticing increases in workplace productivity and morale. Corporations can’t ignore employees and their individual choices anymore. If they do, it will be at their expense.

Do I just file away any new facts to my socio-semantic graph for later retrieval? Does it fill a gap in my mental model, hence provoking me to make a decision, ask a question, kick off a business process, send an e-mail, write a blog post?

– Niveau."

Glad to see people working to fix google's massive massive mistake. However, this is only like a 40% solution since it just brings back sharing and not commenting. I'm holding out for hivemind.org

What Motivates Us To Post On Google Plus | Media Tapper – Taken from the point of view of these 3 motivators for intellectual activity, Google+ is a platform that allows you to use all of them in the most complete and holistic way. I have read about many people that were not actively blogging or creating content before G+, and for which this platform has opened the doors of collective creation.

What has been your experience when creating content for G+? Do you consider that the factors delineated above are in-line with your motivations for posting?

Creating a ebook with LibreOffice Writer – Something else you should do is validate your EPUB. Validation is the process of making sure that your EPUB books contain all the elements that ebook readers expect. Like what? Here’s a partial list:

    Complete metadata
The proper directory structure in the EPUB file
Valid XHTML
Working links and references to files in the EPUB file
A table of contents

All of that should be fine, but it’s best to check. To do that in Sigil, select Tools > Validate Epub. Validation only takes a few seconds but it’s a useful step

This hack is actually three mini-hacks rolled into one—Voltaic shows how to replace the low-capacity rechargeable batteries in the lamp's battery pack with larger batteries, mod the lamp to accept additional external solar panels, and adding a modified Minty Boost charging circuit to allow devices to pull up to 1 Amp of electricity.

The behavior I refer to is purposely destroying the RSS sharing platform for no other reason than forcing people to put that activity onto G+. It's especially a shame because you could have had your cake and eaten it too. What you could have done is added a button at the top just like you did for games called "RSS shares", that is where users could have gone to look at the ton of RSS content their fellow Reader users share. And you could have also allowed sharing to G+. Instead you destroyed a great sharing platform just so you could force people to share to G+. And now everyone will cut down what they share one hundred fold because they won't want to spam their G+ streams.

Networked Society ‘On the Brink’ – I favorited a YouTube video: In On The Brink we discuss the past, present and future of connectivity with a mix of people including David Rowan, chief editor of Wired UK; Caterina Fake, founder of Flickr; and Eric Wahlforss, the co-founder of Soundcloud. Each of the interview…

Don’t Give Your Users Shit Work – This is why I was never fascinated by Google+ and its concept of Circles. You have to go through entire sub-communities of your friends and drop them into arbitrary groupings. That sounds like shit work to me. What happens if I get really hammered with a Business Acquaintance and he becomes a Close Drinking Partner? Do I move his circles around? What happens if we hire him? Is he a Coworker and a Close Drinking Partner? The last thing I want to have to worry about is continually micromanaging another facet of life. This is important, since Google+ Circles is allegedly about privacy, and if you don’t continually cultivate your circles, you could inadvertently send out the wrong update to the wrong subset of contacts.

tools that lubricate human communication – omenti- All of these tools are windows into something much deeper – us and our desire to communicate. I would bet a lot that we are much closer to the beginning than the end of a period of great change. The Industrial Revolution took about one hundred and fifty years and we’re only about fifty years into the current revolution.
From my vantage point I don’t see the younger generation as being more adroit simply because they grew up in a new world. They were surrounded by different tools and defaulted to them making them their own, but these tools will change. The term digital native is popular, but I don’t see the process of change as abrupt with people on one side or the other of a divide — a rich continuum of tools has been emerging. Some will replace old modes of communications entirely and some will serve niche groups differently. And there are surprises when very old tools prove to be much more robust than imagined.

Don’t Send That Email. Pick up the Phone! – Anthony Tjan – Harvard Business Review – Email is one of the greatest productivity contributors of the past two decades, and social communication platforms such as Twitter and Facebook have fundamentally changed and positively enriched the means and reach with which we are able to interact. Yet we have to recognize when such digital channels cannot substitute for a live conversation. Email and social networking modes of communications have created a generation of casually convenient new connections, and even helped us deepen existing relationships, but they can rarely replace the real world

Information dis-intermediaries are new hackers – discourse and notes – Broadly speaking, there is nothing new under the sun. Broadly speaking, the original curation technology was the very telephone switch with which the hackers tinkered. And here we are now, decades later, tearing down old filters to build new ones. Broadly speaking, however, there is still a difference between Morse code and the Internet, and innovation that happens in little steps, with little perfections and improvements, before too long reaches a point where evolution is seen as revolution with hindsight. The hacking that is happening in information and disintermediation, the themes in transactional efficiency described herein, and the three enterprising symbols at the forefront of these movements, will merit revisiting at some point in the future. The work these three have undertaken is much bigger than we may now realize.

Change Management is the Foundation of a Social Organization | Social Business News – The foundation for social organization transformation is culture and leadership. Process and technology initiatives are certainly important and play a vital role; but without a change in organizational behavior it will prove meaningless. Change starts from the top and it’s the leaders that are responsible for facilitating this change.

This video is like a chart where you take the current Apple product lineup and project out 10 years with a ruler, assuming the products stay the same but gain even richer features.

These posts became the basis of a whole new product he would create which is known as the “Nanode”. Nanode is short for “Network Application Node” and is an open source, low cost Arduino board with built in Ethernet courtesy of the Microchip ENC28J60 chip. Over 1000 Nanode’s have been sold in the past few months.

The Impermanence of Knowledge | Energy Bulletin – Abstract

Knowledge is essential to our existence. Without knowledge life is almost impossible. So we need to care about what we know. In the recent past mankind has managed to collect enormous amounts of knowledge. This era is now nearing its end. For knowledge is, perhaps surprisingly, intimately connected with energy. We are at present in for a severe energy crisis, which translates into a knowledge crisis. In other words: the science boom is over. But not only will it be next to impossible to continue increasing our knowledge, even keeping the knowledge we already have will become a great challenge.

The Science of Change – The key is that we need to change ourselves. We need to transform, not them. We don’t need to occupy Wall Street, we simply need to occupy Main Street because that is where they occupy us. It is not enough to marvel at our numbers, civil disobedience, and cardboard signs. We need a Science of change so that we can do so.

steve jobs and the no @$$hole rule – Bottom line: I still believe in Sutton’s rule, but Jobs was exceptional. Almost no one had his deep knowledge of the high tech business or such an acute sense of style and design. Few can build an organization tailored to their personality. Most @$$holes will never be in Jobs’ league and will merely make our lives miserable. Long live the no @$$hole rule!

Many executives recognize that social media is powerful, even if they still wonder in the back of their minds whether it’s just a time sink. Yet, even when they decide that there is potential, these execs get hung up on trying to figure how to apply social technologies to their companies, how to engage and empower their employees to participate.

Here’s the trick with social business: Focus on people and culture.

The Connected Company: Environment and Organization Come First « Dachis Group Collaboratory – Technology solutions will be applied to management challenges in time. Market forces make it nearly inevitable. It remains to be seen if they’ll be effective without management interventions that consider the culture and human side of the equation. It’s important to allow for new roles and ways of thinking to grow organically within an organization as a foundation for this transition.

Our collaborative discovery sessions with clients reveal patterns to the environmental needs of major organizations. We’ve found that is helpful to share with clients a list of socially calibrated attributes that may prompt internal evaluation and change.

How does your organization compare with this list? Are you ready to make a transition to managing a socially calibrated organization?

The cure for corporate inertia | opensource.com – Why are management processes the last bastion of resistance when a company is trying to change? I think there are three linked reasons.

Management processes are a long way from the action. They support primary value-adding activities, but are often two or three steps removed from the marketplace, so feedback from customers about the need to work differently or more quickly is filtered and lost.
There are strong vested interests at play. Board members like to offer advice and make decisions, lawyers like writing contracts. Turkeys don't vote for Thanksgiving. Enough said.
Management processes are usually dependent on each other, and together they create a tightly-woven matrix that cannot easily be pulled apart. If you try to change one process, you upset a further two or three others, and pretty soon you are taking on the entire system.
