walkaround – Wave on App Engine – Google Project Hosting – Walkaround is a variant of Wave, based on the Apache Wave code base, that runs on App Engine. Walkaround can import waves from wave.google.com to allow users to keep working with their data regardless of the future of wave.google.com. (The import feature is still experimental.)

Much of the walkaround code is not specific to Wave, but factored out as a separate, more general collaboration layer that manages shared live objects. These objects can be modified by multiple clients at the same time, with changes made by any client immediately broadcast to all others. The Wave application is built on top of this, but the live collaboration layer is flexible enough to support other applications. See the design overview.

Walkaround supports live concurrent rich-text editing, in-line replies, user avatars, wave gadgets, attachments, and we are working on integrating App Engine's full text search service. For now, it does not support Wave robots, federation, or private replies, but these features could be added.

Social Networks: What Maslow Misses | Psychology Today – Maslow's model needs rewiring so it matches our brains. Belongingness is the driving force of human behavior, not a third tier activity. The system of human needs from bottom to top, shelter, safety, sex, leadership, community, competence and trust, are dependent on our ability to connect with others. Belonging to a community provides the sense of security and agency that makes our brains happy and helps keep us safe.

Why Peter Drucker Distrusted Facts – Stephen Wunker – Harvard Business Review – Consider how Drucker's view contrasts with the typical corporate process. Decision makers may have a general sense of stakeholders' opinions, but in their eagerness to act and to avoid controversy they do not probe to understand these perspectives fully. Rather, they quickly make a decision and then marshal facts to support it. Indeed, one top consulting firm has boasted for decades of an approach that develops an early hypothesis and refines it over the course of an engagement — rather than testing many competing hypotheses in the search for the one that best represents the truth.

Is Rational Thinking in Business Always Better than Instinct? – Forbes – This challenge of learning an art is essentially a process of internalizing the decision-making process framed to a very specific context. How you get better at it is by learning to accelerate how you recognize known (often complex) patterns. The higher your skill level the more complex the pattern you can perform and make decisions on without having to consciously think about it. It is in effect non-rational because you are so attuned to the habit that your body may act or react before you even realize you are doing it.

Networked Society ‘On the Brink’ – I favorited a YouTube video: In On The Brink we discuss the past, present and future of connectivity with a mix of people including David Rowan, chief editor of Wired UK; Caterina Fake, founder of Flickr; and Eric Wahlforss, the co-founder of Soundcloud. Each of the interview…

Don’t Give Your Users Shit Work – This is why I was never fascinated by Google+ and its concept of Circles. You have to go through entire sub-communities of your friends and drop them into arbitrary groupings. That sounds like shit work to me. What happens if I get really hammered with a Business Acquaintance and he becomes a Close Drinking Partner? Do I move his circles around? What happens if we hire him? Is he a Coworker and a Close Drinking Partner? The last thing I want to have to worry about is continually micromanaging another facet of life. This is important, since Google+ Circles is allegedly about privacy, and if you don’t continually cultivate your circles, you could inadvertently send out the wrong update to the wrong subset of contacts.

tools that lubricate human communication – omenti- All of these tools are windows into something much deeper – us and our desire to communicate. I would bet a lot that we are much closer to the beginning than the end of a period of great change. The Industrial Revolution took about one hundred and fifty years and we’re only about fifty years into the current revolution.
From my vantage point I don’t see the younger generation as being more adroit simply because they grew up in a new world. They were surrounded by different tools and defaulted to them making them their own, but these tools will change. The term digital native is popular, but I don’t see the process of change as abrupt with people on one side or the other of a divide — a rich continuum of tools has been emerging. Some will replace old modes of communications entirely and some will serve niche groups differently. And there are surprises when very old tools prove to be much more robust than imagined.

Don’t Send That Email. Pick up the Phone! – Anthony Tjan – Harvard Business Review – Email is one of the greatest productivity contributors of the past two decades, and social communication platforms such as Twitter and Facebook have fundamentally changed and positively enriched the means and reach with which we are able to interact. Yet we have to recognize when such digital channels cannot substitute for a live conversation. Email and social networking modes of communications have created a generation of casually convenient new connections, and even helped us deepen existing relationships, but they can rarely replace the real world

Information dis-intermediaries are new hackers – discourse and notes – Broadly speaking, there is nothing new under the sun. Broadly speaking, the original curation technology was the very telephone switch with which the hackers tinkered. And here we are now, decades later, tearing down old filters to build new ones. Broadly speaking, however, there is still a difference between Morse code and the Internet, and innovation that happens in little steps, with little perfections and improvements, before too long reaches a point where evolution is seen as revolution with hindsight. The hacking that is happening in information and disintermediation, the themes in transactional efficiency described herein, and the three enterprising symbols at the forefront of these movements, will merit revisiting at some point in the future. The work these three have undertaken is much bigger than we may now realize.

Zarafa is mainly based on Open Source and Open Standards

, siehe hier.

Die nächste Session zu OpenXChange wäre hier jetzt auch interessant, andererseits ist eine zeitgleiche Session zu “Wissensmanagement in verteilt arbeitenden Teams mit TikiWiki” einfach relevanter für mich.

I know I’m late to the party, but want to note this for me anyway: Bruce Nussbaum and team have fourteen innovation predictions for 2008 ready:

Get ready for … anything. As companies, governments – indeed, entire countries – confront an array of dilemmas, the only constant will be change

Been there, seen that. But anyway, this is interesting and thought-provoking (see the slideshow). I don’t buy all of these and will make a mental note for end December 08 to check back. But some, like e.g. innovation as strategy and more applications-rich mobile communications are almost too obvious.
