Social circles can add value only if we power them with our time and passion (since humans give back only on certain circumstances, while search engines give “one shot auto-learning fast answers”).
• Social Intranets in Social Business – About 2 years ago, we started aggressively using the platform for a number of internal processes (for example, bug tracking). There were two things that we noticed pretty quickly: (1) It was really easy to see where we needed to add features or to change the way things worked to make them simpler (labelled the “dog food” effect in the software industry). (2) It really did improve how well we worked. Making it easy to discuss, organize, vote on things, etc. really did help us make better decisions and provide a transparent record of how we got from one place to another in our thinking.
• Remembering Email | TechCrunch – You tech bloggers need to understand that no-one (this also applies MG Siegler who also hates email) has any problems with email. You're like 0.01% of the email population. Email isn't going away, same for texting…replacing it with any proprietary closed system would be like going two decades back

• From social intranets to collaboration ecosystems – Forbes – the five pillars of social intranets:

  Information. To be social, an intranet must allow information to easily flow vertically and horizontally, and allow employees to express themselves in various ways (articles, status updates, comments, content sharing…).
  Knowledge. Content repositories are way too statics, they must evolve to a more democratic and flexible way to capitalize on knowledge (enterprise wikis) and to spread it (social learning).
  Communities. I assume you are already convinced of the importance of enterprise social networks. But simply providing a ESN to your employees will not allow communities to emerge, you will have to enable them through stimulation and moderations.
  Collaboration. I also assume you are aware of the benefits of online collaborative workspaces, but one can do much more with socialized project management solutions, ideagoras or social serious games.
  Business processes and data. Last but not least, software allowing employees to produce, collect, structure, analyze and publish data is key to wider adoption. You will easily find pockets of users willing to participate in “social experiments”, but to rally EVERY employee, you will have to include business applications and processes in your internal social platform.

Why the Internet of Things finally makes sense

After a decade of hearing about "the Internet of things", where everything will have an IP address, I'm starting to finally believe it. What's changed? The Open Hardware movement, which is doing for connected devices what the Web did for information.

The old vision of the Internet of Things came to us from the likes of Cisco and Nokia, which were trying to promote end-to-end connected device standards (that used their gear, natch). Think of that as the 'Information Superhighway" era of the net, those days in the early 90s when the wired future was going to be brought to us by AT&T and Cablevision.

The new vision is more akin to the Web, which was brought to us by, well, us. The engineers agreed on some basic open standards — HTTP, HTML, TCP/IP — and we did all the rest, creating the Web with our own ideas, uses and creativity.

Today, the new Internet of Things model is based on simple open standards: Arduino, WiFi and Web APIs. The model is open innovation and community creation. And the devices are being created by regular people with their own needs, not big companies.

Look around your house. Everything that has a proprietary embedded processor in it is a candidate for being reinvented with Open Hardware. That's how the Internet of Things is going to finally become a reality.
